The Cockburn Cougars women’s State Basketball League has signed 6-foot-1 forward Alexandra Wittinger to the Family for season 2020.

Wittinger comes to the Cougar Family having played four years for the University of Illinois in the iconic ‘Big-10’ Conference, averaging more than 14 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks per game since her Sophomore year.

At 6-foot-1, Wittinger plays above her height, leaving Illinois with the All-time blocks record in school history and multiple six block game efforts.

Cockburn women’s Head Coach and General Manager Tyrone Thwaites knows she fills a need inside the Cougar program.

“Alex ticks every single box for us,” he said.

“She runs the floor incredibly well, she hunts the glass, brings an elite defensive mindset, and is great off the bounce for her size.

“That aside, Alex comes highly recommended from a very reputable program. Everyone speaks incredibly highly of her.

“She has a close to unmatchable work ethic, which inside a young and developing Cougar program is a wonderful asset for us.”

The women’s program now has 16 signed athletes for 2020 with an average age of just under 23 years old.

Thwaites is excited for what is a strong mix of youth and experience moving forward.

“It’s going to be a whole lot of fun with this group,” he said.

“We have a core group that’s really pumped to drive their own identity next year.

“Jodee Sontay, Nicole Roberts, Nicole Pitcher, Tilly Muir and Haylee De Sousa have been around long enough to know what this club stands for and how they can play their part in that.

“Rounded out with Tahlia Fejo, Alina Hartmann and now Alex, it’s a very dynamic core group.

“That’s before we even talk about our under 21 brigade of Kahlia Morgan, Maccy and Emerson Taylor, Jesni Cooper, Tia Morgan, Emma Burke and Abbey Cowan.

“We’re really excited about our future.”

Wittinger has just completed her structural engineering degree and will be available for the women’s first game in late-March.

The Cougar men’s program will launch their second recruit of the off-season tomorrow at 12pm.
