The Cockburn Basketball Association (CBA) is pleased to announce Tyrone Thwaites as the Cougar Family’s women’s State Basketball League (SBL) Head Coach for the next three seasons.

Thwaites is a passionate Cougar Family member with considerable experience at National Championships level, with a wider involvement as an assistant coach of the Australian 3×3 program and the Perth Lynx.

His work ethic and thorough attention to process aligns with the club’s strategic plan for sustainable success inside the association’s SBL programs.

The CBA board is confident Thwaites’ passion for women’s sport will drive the program forward and complement the association’s future, with a strong focus on player and team development.

He will continue as General Manager of the Cougar Family, including oversight of a thriving WA junior basketball league (WABL) program.

The leaders of the Cougar Family remain committed to all facets of the association, from the Cougar Cub playing for the first time, through to the committed men and women of our SBL programs.

The board will work closely with Thwaites to ensure the positive outcomes arising from his appointment are taken full advantage of, while continuing to embrace the values of inclusion, enjoyment and excellence.

Current Assistant Coach Chelsea Evans will return in 2020 and is ready to move into an exciting new phase.

“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to work alongside Tyrone,” she said.

“His experience and connection with the West Australian basketball community will be a great asset to our women’s program.”

Women’s leader Nicole Roberts has seen the program evolve over 15 years, and is ready for the next chapter.

“This is a really exciting time for the women’s program,” she said.

“Tyrone brings with him a wealth of knowledge, a plethora of experiences and is someone dedicated to, and passionate about, building sustainable success.”

With the coaching staff and 2019 most improved athlete Matilda Muir already in place, the focus now turns to rounding out the Cougar Family’s roster for 2020.
